From Stanford to the Frontline: How AI Helps Ukrainian Soldiers Repair Equipment Under Fire

NeoLens, an American deep-tech startup with Ukrainian roots, announces the launch of the world’s first AI assistant for diagnosing and repairing military equipment that can operate offline, directly on the battlefield. The system is already helping mechanics and operators of the Armed Forces of Ukraine more efficiently restore Humvee, MaxxPro, and M113 vehicles — saving resources, reducing repair time, and ultimately saving the lives of soldiers. In Ukraine, NeoLens is currently used in dozens of repair battalions along the entire front line and is gradually expanding to other types of equipment, including robotic platforms and artillery. The system is most actively applied on Humvee platforms, of which more than five thousand are currently in service.

NeoLens is the first AI assistant capable of operating completely without the Internet. Thanks to its autonomy, the system remains a secure and reliable tool even where there is no connection. No other solution on the market offers a comparable level of functionality.

The startup was founded at Stanford University in 2025 within the Lean Launchpad and Hacking for Defense programs. It was created by Ukrainian-American Ostap Korkuna and Taiwanese-American James Leo, for whom supporting Ukraine is both a personal value and a mission.

Ostap Korkuna, Co-Founder & CTO of NeoLens:

“After hundreds of interviews with Ukrainian and American military personnel, it became clear that the frontline critically needs an autonomous repair tool that does not depend on network connectivity. NeoLens was created for exactly this purpose.”

James Leo, Co-Founder & CEO of NeoLens:

“I cannot stay aside when a peaceful country is invaded. I stand with Ukraine. I stand with the Ukrainian people.”

The product allows soldiers to perform step-by-step diagnostics, detect malfunctions, and carry out field repairs at an expert level, even if a mechanic is working with a particular platform for the first time.

“NeoLens saves us hours of work, improves mechanics’ safety, and helps extend the service life of vehicles. The feedback from mechanics is very positive — they want to use the app, and I know that with it, the work is done without mistakes. This kind of technology is a true revolution for frontline repair units,” says Ihor Simutin, Commander of a Repair Unit of the Logistics Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

A fundamental part of NeoLens’s mission is that the product is free for Ukrainian military personnel. The company develops technology that helps vehicles operate longer and soldiers return home alive. Future plans include the development of multimodal diagnostics based on photo and video, as well as expanding the technology into civilian sectors and the international defense market.

Ukrainian military units, mechanics, and volunteer repair initiatives can request free access to the NeoLens system by submitting an application. More details are available via the link.
