From schoolchild to student: how digital skills help prepare for the NMT

NMT-2026 is the moment when school life officially ends and adult life begins. High scores not only open the door to university, they also give you the chance to choose your dream major, rather than just whatever is available. However, you need to prepare for the test in a new way. Cramming textbooks the night before the exam will no longer work — modern preparation requires the ability to work with information in digital format. The Kyiv Institute of Business and Technology has developed a comprehensive programme, which you can learn more about here: https://kibit.edu.ua/yak-pidgotuvatysya-do-nmt-z-ukrayinskoyi-movy/. Everything is laid out step by step — from phonetics to stylistics. But even the coolest programme will be useless if you don’t know how to plan your time and filter out information noise.

It’s strange: Generation Z grew up with phones in their hands, but for some reason, many still can’t properly organise their online learning. Scrolling through TikTok for hours is one thing, but building a system for preparing for the NMT is quite another. Digital literacy in the context of learning is not about the number of subscriptions to educational channels, but about real skills in working with information.

Digital skills for effective learning

Time management and planning

Preparing for the NMT is a long-distance race, not a 100-metre sprint. The classic mistake looks like this: in September, you think, ‘I still have plenty of time,’ in February, ‘I’ll make it,’ and in March, you suddenly realise that you haven’t touched syntax at all. The outcome is predictable: panic, sleepless nights, and a result below your potential.

Digital planners save you from this chaos. Google Calendar, Notion, even regular reminders on your phone — the main thing is to start using them. Make a schedule with realistic deadlines: ‘finish all morphology by 15 March,’ ‘practice test every Tuesday.’ There is research on how our brain perceives time and stress — in short, small regular steps work better than heroic attempts to learn everything in a week.

The main rule: divide the elephant into pieces. Don’t ‘learn all the syntax,’ but ‘analyse complex sentences with subordinate clauses in 90 minutes.’ Specifics help you avoid turning the task into an abstract ‘I’ll do it sometime.’

Working with online resources

There is so much written about the NMT on the internet that you could read until the test itself and still not have time to cover everything. Half of the materials are outright nonsense, and the other half is outdated information. Critical thinking is not an option here, but a necessity.

What really works: the official website of the Ukrainian Centre for Educational Quality Assessment (it has an archive of all tests), verified educational platforms, materials from teachers with real experience. Be cautious with everything else, especially when it comes to spelling. New spelling rules have been in effect since 2019, and if you are studying from old materials, be prepared for surprises on the test.

Life hack: check the publication date of the materials. A five-year-old Facebook post about stress can do you a disservice.

Using apps for learning

There are lots of apps that make learning less boring. Flashcards for words where you constantly confuse the stress. Spelling trainers that immediately show you your mistakes. Test simulators with a timer. All of this really helps, as long as you don’t turn the process into ‘collecting Pokemon’ — when you download apps, set them up, and then forget to open them.

Technologies that help you prepare

Online testing and simulations

The best way to understand what to expect on the NMT is to take several dozen practice tests in real conditions. With a timer, without hints, without the option of ‘oh, wait, let me think about it.’ Online platforms are ideal for this — they are as close as possible to what will be on the real test.

The advantage of digital tests is that you see the result instantly. No need to wait for someone to check — the programme immediately shows you: ‘here you messed up with the numbers, and here you forgot the comma in a complex sentence.’ You can work on specific problem areas instead of rereading the entire textbook from cover to cover.

Video lessons and interactive materials

Reading a dry paragraph about the declension of participles is one thing. Watching a 15-minute animated video where everything is explained with examples is quite another. For many people, the visual format simply works better than text.

Plus, you can pause the video, rewind an unclear moment, and watch at 1.5x speed if the material is easy. When a teacher explains something once in a lesson, you either understand it or you don’t. Here, you can watch it five times until you get it.

Progress tracking systems

When you’re preparing for months, it’s easy to lose perspective. It seems like you’re stuck in one place. Digital platforms solve this problem — they collect statistics: how many tests you’ve taken, how many points you’ve scored, how your results change over time.

Seeing a graph where your scores are slowly but steadily increasing motivates you to continue. Even if it seems like nothing is working out right now, the numbers don’t lie. There is progress, it’s just not always obvious without specific metrics.
